Does God Know You?

Does God know everybody? You might respond, “Sure God knows everybody! He’s omniscient!” However, though God is omniscient, He declares that, one day, He will tell many people He never knew them.

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7: 22‑23)

How can this be? The answer lies in our understanding of the word “know.” In some contexts the word “know” has a very special meaning. Early in the book of Genesis God recorded,

“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.” (Genesis 4:1)

Adam didn’t just look at Eve and declare, “Oh! I know you!” No. Something much more significant happened. Adam entered into a personal relationship with Eve resulting in the birth of Cain, their firstborn son.

In the spiritual realm, God the Son, Jesus Christ, enters into a special personal relationship with each of His people. He shed His blood and rose again to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). Referring to these people as His sheep, Jesus declared,

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.” (John 10:27‑30)

Adam’s physical relationship with Eve produced the fruit of her womb. Christ’s spiritual relationship with His people produces the fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” (Galatians 5:22-24)

Has Christ established a relationship with you, which has caused you to come and follow Him? Is He weaning you from fleshly lusts, and producing the fruit of the Spirit in your life?
