Moses, God’s lawgiver, trusted Christ

Moses trusted Christ, God’s coming Messiah.  You might ask, “How can that be?  Moses died more than a thousand years before Christ’s birth.”

When Moses was born, the Egyptians had begun to fear the growing Israelite population in their land.  Consequently, the king of Egypt commanded that each male baby, born to Israelite parents, be killed.

“And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:  And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live” (Exodus 1:15-16).

The parents of Moses, however, hid him for three months.  When they could hide him no longer, his mother built a floating basket and placed him in it.  Committing Moses to God’s omnipotent care, she placed the basket in the river where Pharaoh’s daughter found it.  Pharaoh’s daughter had compassion on Moses and hired his mother to nurse him for her.  Moses was raised to be the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.

Although Moses could have enjoyed the great wealth associated with his social position among Egyptian nobility, he was more interested in his relationship with Israel’s eternal Messiah.  Here’s what scripture says regarding his priorities.

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward” (Hebrews 11:23-26).

Notice that the Scripture above shows that Christ, the promised Messiah, was the one that Moses valued more than the wealth of Egypt.  In due time this Messiah, God the Son, was born of the Virgin Mary and gave his life blood to pay for the sins of His people.
