Which Advocate will be Your Lawyer?

There is a common saying that anyone who represents one’s self in a court of law has a fool for a lawyer. Another name for “lawyer,” is “advocate.” It is essential to have an advocate, other than yourself, argue your case, for you, before the judge. After all, a defendant, who might be guilty, is likely to be given less credibility than an attorney of known innocence.
After you and I die, we will each come before God the Father, the ultimate judge, who will determine our innocence or guilt, and sentence us to Heaven, or to the lake of fire, accordingly. Will you have an advocate of known innocence to defend you?
Here’s the problem. Scripture declares: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). What righteous advocate would even think of defending guilty sinners such as you and me?
In an earlier article we discovered that Jesus Christ offered Himself as a pure sacrifice for all sinners who will call upon Him for mercy and forgiveness based on His sacrificial death. We found that the redemption price of His blood is credited to the account of all who plead with Him to be their Savior. With His righteousness credited to your account, He will step in as your advocate, in that day, declaring that He paid the penalty for your sins and thus you are free from guilt. Scripture says of Christians, “…we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).
There is only one advocate for sinners. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). No pastor, priest, bishop, rabbi, imam, church, or collection of good works can take His place.
Do you have the Lord Jesus Christ as your advocate? If not, when you die, He will join His Father on the bench as your judge rather than as your advocate. When the only possible Savior and Advocate becomes your final judge, you will have no further hope for eternity.
