Are You Safe in the Hands of He who Controls the Wings of the Wind

“Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:” (Psalm 104:1-3)
Years ago, I took flying lessons to earn a glider pilot license. Having completed the requirements for solo flight, I was allowed to practice flying without my instructor onboard. However, each flight was at my instructor’s discretion. He would be present at the airport during the flight. One day my instructor approved a flight in what was probably questionable weather. The clouds were dark and foreboding. After being towed to about 1500 feet, an exciting updraft swept my glider to about 4000 feet in about three minutes.
Awed, I sensed that God was showing me just a small taste of His power. I had no fear but, rather, a strong assurance that I was safe in His mighty hand. He was taking me for a short but impressive tour of His “wings of the wind.”
Meanwhile, my family and instructor, on the ground, couldn’t see me. I had no radio so they sent a tow plane up to look for me. Not spotting me, it returned and landed. At one point, during all this excitement, they saw a roll cloud move down the runway.
Concerned that those on the ground might be worried, I decided to land. Final approach and touchdown were in the midst of a huge downpour. Upon landing, the glider became immediately stuck in the mud. We all ran to the operations building to escape the downpour. My instructor then expressed relief at my safe return.
I’ve never forgotten how impressed I was with God’s power that day. However, His eternal salvation is a far greater demonstration of His power. The apostle Paul recognized this in his letter to the Romans:
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)
No one is able to pay for their own sins. Only the power of God could accomplish this by venting His judgment on God the Son at Calvary. The apostle Paul urges us:
“… we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)
Have you been reconciled to God who controls the mighty “wings of the wind?”
