WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?

Have you noticed that, recently, wickedness has increased mightily? Many in our society justify the murder of millions by assigning the name “fetus” to a baby even as it emerges from the birth canal. The sin of sodomy, which, for generations, has been abhorred because God declared it an “abomination” (Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:26-27) is now encouraged as an “alternate life style.” It is becoming a “hate crime” to denounce actions which God, Himself, hates.

Why does such wickedness rage in our day? This same question was asked by the Psalmist. Listen! “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us” (Psalm 2:1-3).

Notice that then, just as today, men and rulers conspired together to reject the healthy restraints of a Holy triune God. Just as then, our society, today, is throwing off God’s restraints against murder, sodomy, and a host of other prohibitions designed for the good of mankind. The situation seems hopeless as wickedness seems to infiltrate all of humanity. What is to be done? Will God’s commands prevail or will even He be ultimately defeated?

The answer is clear. Listen to God’s declaration which follows immediately upon the heels of the question above: “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion” (Psalm 2:4-5).

In spite of the apparent hopelessness of the situation, the remainder of this Psalm proclaims the coming of Christ, the Savior, who would redeem His people by His death on a Roman cross. The redemption of His people has been bought and paid for. So too, the eternal defeat of those that mock God has been assured. The outcome is certain!

With whom will you align yourself? Will you cast your lot with those who appear to be gaining the upper hand in mocking God, or will you turn from your sin, and call out to God for the mercy and forgiveness Christ purchased for His people on the cross of Calvary?
