Sing to Christ

We Christians, must sing. It is a crucial part of our highest calling – worship! Many Scriptures emphasize the role of singing in this highest of occupations.

“Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth (Psalm 33:1-4).”

This Psalm is addressed to the righteous! We sinners should sing because we have been made righteous through the sacrificial blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a miracle wrought by God, Himself!

Notice that this singing entails preparation. God describes instruments of accompaniment for our singing. There is great effort associated with assembling these instruments for this high purpose.

We are to sing skillfully. This takes practice! How often do we muddle through our singing in a manner unworthy of His majesty? How often do we rush from the world, into our meetings, with no thought of doing anything to improve our skill in singing, together, to Him? Please do not misunderstand me here. It is not the final result of professionalism that pleases Him. Rather, He is pleased with the desire and dedication of our hearts in seeking to praise him ever more skillfully. Perhaps seeking for His skill, in our singing to Him, is an indicator of how much we really love Him.

Our skillful singing will exhibit His Word, in song. Why is this important? It is important because “the Word of the Lord is right;” it is the conduit of faith through which He draws hearts with His love. Our skillful singing should attract sinners who need to be saved.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)”

You may say, “I can’t sing!” In all my years, I have met only one person of whom this might have been true. Many, with a heart-felt desire to sing more skillfully to the Savior they love, have found their skill increased by Him.

When God looks at your heart, does He see enthusiasm for singing His praises more skillfully with one-another? It may be one of the most beautiful demonstrations of our unity in Christ.
