COULD JESUS SIN?

There is a blasphemous teaching which I’ve heard from multiple sources over the years. These include a church, a Christian radio station, and a so-called Christian college.
This blasphemous teaching claims that: “Although Jesus Christ never sinned, He could have!” This is like saying “Although an apple tree never produced a tomato, it could have.” Preposterous! Apple trees cannot produce tomatoes. It’s inconsistent with their very nature. Likewise, Christ, who is God, could never sin. It’s inconsistent with His very nature as God. Claiming that He could have sinned, denies the Deity of Christ and the Trinity. Let’s examine this in light of the following three key points.
- Jesus is God the Son,
- Sin is a denial or rejection of God, and
- It is impossible for God to deny Himself.
At both Christ’s baptism, and transfiguration, God the Father introduced Jesus Christ as God His Son.
“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)
“While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” (Matthew 17:5)
Scriptures teach, and Christ Himself claimed, that He is one with the Father.
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (1 John 5:7)
“I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30)
“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)
Notice: In the preceding passage, Jesus identifies Himself as the great “I AM” of Scripture (Exodus 3:14). This is the same name Jehovah-God had used, centuries earlier, when He introduced Himself to Moses in the burning bush. This was so obvious to the religious leaders listening to Jesus, that they sought to kill Him.
Next, notice that all who sin are, in fact, denying God. So, if Christ could have sinned, He would have been denying God and, hence, Himself. Sin is a denial of God!
“They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” (Titus 1:16)
But Scripture clearly teaches that God cannot deny Himself. It does this in the context of Christ’s faithfulness to His people. Even though we often falter in our faith, He is faithful and pure, and cannot deny Himself!
“If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)
If you’re truly a Christian, you are trusting the Lamb of God who could never deny Himself by sinning. His sacrificial blood permanently paid the penalty for the sin you now abhor.
