Risen as He said

Cleopas and another disciple are mourning Jesus’ death.  Leaving Jerusalem, where Jesus was crucified, they’re sorrowfully walking to Emmaus seven or eight miles away.

Another man, overhearing their sad conversation, joins them.  Although they know the man, they’re prevented from recognizing Him.  Luke chapter 24 records their conversation.

This new companion says,

“What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?”

Cleopas responds,

“Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?”

 The man answers,

“What things?”

Then Cleopas and his companion pour out their hearts.  Describing the horrors of the past week they respond,

“…Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:  And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.  But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.  Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;  And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.  And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.”

The man lovingly chides them:

“O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:”

 He explains that these things were all prophesied by Scripture.  Approaching Emmaus, the disciples ask Him to stay with them overnight because it’s getting late.  As they sit to eat, He breaks bread and gives it to them.  They suddenly realize this man is Jesus, risen from the dead!  He vanishes from their sight!

They immediately return to Jerusalem with joy and excitement.  Upon finding the other disciples they exclaim,

“The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.”

Then, Jesus, Himself, appears in the midst of them and says,

“Peace be unto you.”

Do you have peace with God, through the risen Lamb of God, who came to save His people from their sins?
