Seven Stars of Pleiades — Do they Illustrate truths about Christ’s Church?

While imprisoned for his faith on the isle of Patmos, the Apostle John recorded the following terrifying experience.  He saw one who held seven stars.

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea” (Revelation 1:10-11).

John turned to see who was speaking.

“And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man … And he had in his right hand seven stars: … And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. …” (Revelation 1:12-17)

This “Son of man”, the risen Christ, then told him,

…The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches” (verse 20).

Centuries earlier, God had directed His prophet, Amos, to plead with the nation of Israel to seek their God who had created the seven stars.

“Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, … The LORD is his name…(Amos 5:8).

Notice that, in his statement, Amos presents The LORD as the only one who can remove death and replace it with the bright morning of redemption.

Centuries before Amos’ words, Job had also referred to God’s creation of the well known seven-starred Pleiades constellation.  Job understood that this was infallible proof of His great power (Job 9:1-9).

Modern astronomers have concluded that Pleiades is about 43 light years or 1.4 billion miles across.  Can you even begin to comprehend the unfathomable power of God who made and sustains such a constellation?

Is it possible that God has used Pleiades to illustrate the power of Christ’s mighty love in redeeming His church?  This love caused Him to die and rise again to save His people from their sins (see Ephesians 5:25).

Have you called upon this mighty, loving Redeemer to save you?
