REASONS FOR BEING AN ATHEIST

One reason for embracing atheism is that no one has ever seen God in His full spiritual essence. The Bible itself says, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him” (John 1:18).” Of course, this invisibility test may also suggest the nonexistence of radio waves, magnetic fields, heat, love, hatred, and intentions of people. Perhaps these are also figments of our invisible imagination.

Another reason for being an atheist is the impossibility of comprehending anyone or anything truly infinite. My father once questioned the idea that space is infinite. Then he considered the consequences of space being only a finite entity. In his imagination, he travelled to the very edge of this finite space and found a wall marking its boundary. He placed his hand on that wall and thought to himself, “I wonder what’s on the other side!”

A third reason for atheistic faith is the theory that everything around us could have come into being by random combinations of matter over long periods of time. It’s somewhat troubling that this theory can’t be proven since no-one has ever witnessed this process in its entirety. In fact, even the fairly simple Stonehenge rock formation seems somewhat embarrassing. Based solely on its complex and precise geometric arrangements, scientists, worldwide, have concluded that an intelligent unknown early civilization must have designed it. Though the reasons for this conclusion conflict with atheism’s “intelligent design” phobia, the conclusion is tolerated because the purported Stonehenge designer is not God. However, in the case of even more formidable evidence presented by complex human anatomy, an “intelligent design” conclusion is intolerable because it would require God as the designer. The Bible declares the intelligent design of man when it says, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalms 139:14). This, however, contradicts the prime tenet of atheistic faith which says “there is no God.” Thus, a good atheist must reject such a conclusion.

Perhaps the most powerful argument for being an atheist is the fact that, if God exists, we are all answerable to Him. This is unacceptable to the atheist who prefers to be free of such shackles.

If you’re an atheist, are your reasons this good?
