Years ago I was inspecting a pressure chamber in a large company’s research laboratory. In this pressure chamber they grew semiconductor crystals used in fabricating complex electronic devices. It had a thick glass window, called a portal, through which scientists would look to see what was going on inside.
Your mouth is a portal to your soul. When not carefully controlled, it gives evidence of what is going on inside. Jesus said, “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). Have you ever been surprised at the profanity that sometimes erupts from the mouth of a professing Christian? When this happens, you are getting a peak into the abundance of that person’s heart. The mouth can also provide evidence of a heart full of love for God. “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh” (Luke 6:45).
You and I can try to control what comes out of our mouths so that people will be convinced that there is only good inside. We may even deceive ourselves. Sooner or later, however, our mouth will betray us. This could be a blessing in disguise. God may be using these bursts of evidence as a warning that, regardless of our self-deceptions, God knows the truth. He may be showing you that your religious involvements are just window dressing. He may be alerting you that only by God breathing life into your soul can your heart be made truly pure.
Jesus, who is God the Son, offered His own blood as a substitutionary sacrifice, at the cross of Calvary. This payment is able to redeem repentant sinners from their fallen condition. On the basis of this mighty work, He calls sinners to repentance and invites them to come to Him. He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Are you exhausted from maintaining a false pretense of holiness? Come to Christ. He will breathe life into your soul. He will change you and give you rest!
