MYSTERIOUS BREATH OF LIFE

Have you Received His Breath of Life?

Scripture declares an easily missed statement regarding the “breath of life.”

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7)

The creation account mentions this “breath of life” event only in connection with mankind.  Apparently, man was specially designed as a living soul capable of desiring and enjoying God’s fellowship.  Shortly thereafter, God commanded Adam not to eat of a particular tree.

“… thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”  (Genesis 2:17)

When they ate, they died spiritually, with physical death to follow years later.  Their dead spirits lost any desire to fellowship with God.  Consequently, they hid from Him.

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:8)

Can something dead seek God?  Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the spiritual inabilities of a dead heart.

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:44)

“There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” (Romans 3:11)

“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:6‑8)

However, faith pleases God (Hebrews 11:6) and is thus foreign to the carnal man.  God the Son, Jesus Christ, died and rose again to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).  The carnal man rejects this.

God doesn’t restrain man’s will from choosing good.  Man’s own fallen nature does that.  Only when God’s omnipotent Spirit quickens a man’s heart, does this death spiral end!

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)

Will you trust Christ, joyfully proclaiming God’s miraculous “breath of life” victory over your dead heart?
