JOB AND BEHEMOTH

BEHEMOTH LIVED AT THE TIME OF JOB

Those embracing an evolutionary view of origins deny God’s claims regarding creation.  They would claim that a creature, which Scripture calls behemoth, became extinct millions of years before man evolved.  However, God says he created behemoth and all of the land creatures, at the same time He created man.

The Bible records God’s conversation with Job regarding behemoth.  God had allowed Satan to attack this righteous man and destroy all of Job’s livestock and children.  Then God gave Satan permission to destroy Job’s health.  As Job sat upon the ash heap, scraping his sores, he pleaded for an audience with God.  He wanted God to explain why He was allowing these terrible things to happen.  Job said,

“…Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, …” (Job 31:35)

God’s answer to Job wasn’t quite what Job expected.  Instead of explaining why He had allowed these things to happen, God asked Job a series of His own questions.  These questions were designed to show Job that God is absolutely sovereign and answerable to no one including Job.  He is greater than anything Job had yet comprehended.  He did this by asking where Job was when God created everything.  As already mentioned, one of the amazing creatures God described, was called behemoth.  Behemoth’s cedar-tree-like tail tends to place it among the large creatures  people now call dinosaurs.  Perhaps it was a brontosaurus.  Notice, below, that God specifically declares that He created man and behemoth at the same time. Obviously, Job was familiar with the behemoth creatures then living.

“Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.  Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.  He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.” (Job 40:15-17)

Job couldn’t answer any of God’s many questions.  Job finally realized he had no right to demand any explanations from his almighty creator.

“Then Job answered the LORD, and said, …I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” (Job 42:1-6)

Scripture says ,

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” (Psalm 19:1)

No one has any excuse for not believing in God, as creator, and trusting Him as Savior.  God the Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross redeeming all who trust Him from their penalty of sin.  He then rose from the dead proving His success.  Even during his great ordeal, Job expressed faith in God with the following words.

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:” (Job 19:25-26)

Have you trusted Jesus Christ as Redeemer and Lord?
