There was once a man named Amoz.  His name means “strong.”  He appears 13 times in the Old Testament Scriptures.  Those Scriptures don’t tell us where or how long Amoz lived, nor what he did.  Instead, they speak of Isaiah, “the son of Amoz.”  Apparently, even before Isaiah’s birth, God was providing strength, through his father, for Isaiah’s prophetic work.

Isaiah, the son of Amoz, is well known because the Old Testament book of Isaiah is named after him.  The Lord God used Isaiah to reveal wonderful prophecies, to mankind, regarding Jesus Christ, the Messiah.  He is God the Son, who came to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).

Other prophesies, concerning the Messiah, both preceded and followed those of Isaiah.  For many centuries, God’s people waited, in awe, for their fulfillment.

Isaiah, the son of Amoz, lived in the 8th century BC.  This was approximately 2 centuries before the angel Gabriel gave Daniel his amazing prophesies concerning the coming Savior (Daniel 9:24-27).  Isaiah served under kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah.  God used him to reveal the following prophecy to King Ahaz.

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Ahaz was one of the majority of kings who behaved in evil ways.  Nevertheless, God had sent Isaiah to him when enemies were coming against Judah.  God had told Isaiah to tell Ahaz that God would not allow his enemies to be successful.  God had then told Ahaz to ask for a sign but Ahaz refused to do so.  As a result, God had given him the above sign anyway, but Ahaz would not live to see it fulfilled.

Isaiah, the son of Amoz, also records the following additional prophesy concerning Jesus Christ.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

Each year, in December, many celebrate the incarnation of this “Prince of Peace” who has now come.  Because of our sins, He is the only Savior who can give us peace with God.

Has He become your “Prince of Peace?”
