Will it Still be Urgent in 100 Years?

I remember hearing of a lady who, as a little girl, would often become distressed over some great disappointment.  She would feel her world had ended.  All joy had been abolished.  The future looked dark.  At such times her grandmother would often say, “Cheer up!  In 100 years, it won’t matter!”  This was her grandmother’s way of trying to put things in perspective.  Often, things that seem so incredibly important to us in a moment of distress, quickly fade from our memories as time passes.

In the context of our life on this earth, 100 years is a long time.  In 100 years, it is almost certain that everyone reading this will have passed from this life.  So many things we think are important today, won’t be very important to us 100 years from now.

However, there is one thing that will be very important to us.  Eternity!  As we rush through this life, our attention becomes enslaved to the urgencies of the moment.  We pay little attention to the urgency of eternity!

The Bible tells us,

“… it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: …” (Hebrews 9:27).

Many try to reject this idea but God says,

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:…” (Romans 9:18-21).

God the Son, Jesus Christ, offered His life blood as a sacrifice for sin to redeem all who repent and call upon Him for forgiveness.  He says,

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

He also says,

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).
