One of my favorite words is “synergistic,” describing a combination of things which is greater than the sum of its parts. When entities are combined, the state of their union becomes important. Perhaps this is why our Founding Fathers established the Constitutional requirement that the President of the United States “shall from time to time” describe “the State of the Union,” in a speech to Congress (Article 2, Section 3).

The idea of unions and their respective conditions, however, did not originate in the U.S. Constitution. After creating the Universe, God commanded that certain unions be formed and showed great interest in their condition. Two of the unions that God ordained were: the gathering together of waters, which He called “seas” (Genesis 1:9-10), and the joining together of one man and one woman in a marriage relationship symbolic of the fellowship between Christ and His people (Genesis 2:18-24, Matthew 19:3-6, Ephesians 5:22-32).

Conversely, God forbade the formation of certain other unions, and ordained some permanent separations within His creation. He “divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4), separated land from the seas (Genesis 1:9-10), and forbade same-gender marriage unions. In fact, God declared such same-gender unions to be an “abomination” (Leviticus 18:22).

Though God had created Adam and Eve to live in harmonious union with Himself, they sinned thereby plunging the entire human race into death’s darkness. Scripture tells us that “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Thus resulted a great separation between mankind’s darkness and the light of God’s holiness. Adam and Eve hid themselves. God banned them from the Garden of Eden. Their fellowship with Him died, and they became spiritually dead. Ever since, this dead spiritual condition has relentlessly produced physical death in every man, woman, and child.

That’s why God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ came to sacrifice Himself. He shed His blood on the cross of Calvary to pay the penalty for sin. Only in this way was a re-union between God and man made possible. Christ says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).” However, those who reject Him, and refuse to repent of their sin, will never find that life-giving union with God (John 3:36 & Rev 14:11).
