GROPING IN DARKNESS

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (John 1:1-5)”

That last sentence in the above passage is God’s thunderous commentary on the plight of mankind. Though “The heavens declare the glory of God…” (Psalm 19:1), mankind is groping in darkness. This disaster began with man’s sin in the Garden of Eden and continues to this very moment. God had told Adam and Eve that, in the day they ate of the forbidden tree, they would die. They did, and lost the “light of life” (John 8:12). The entire race of their descendents (including you and me) plunged into perpetual darkness.

Look around and observe the building darkness as rejection of light accelerates. Men are unable to discern good from evil. Men “…call evil good and good evil… (Isaiah 5:20).” Men have abandoned commitment to truth and speak lies whenever lies are “convenient.” Do you have confidence in the truthfulness of government leaders? Do others around you have confidence in you? Should they? Are you, also, filled with darkness? Do you have any desire to be separated from it?

God has been separating light from darkness since creation. “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness (Genesis 1:3-4).” Jesus, who is God the Son, said, “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life (John 8:12).” He came to offer His own life’s blood as a sacrificial redemption price for all who repent and come to Him for salvation.

There is only one remedy. Jesus said, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 4:6).”

Will you repent of your sin and plead for mercy from Jesus, “the light of life,” or will you continue in darkness until He sentences you to it forever?
