Which Eternal Consequence Have You Chosen?

Children seek immediate gratification. The baby wants milk … now! Young children want toys … now! As children grow, they begin planning for longer periods of life, but many avoid thoughts about what follows death. Since our existence beyond death shall infinitely outlast our life before death, this is amazing!
As of this writing, the smallest estimate I could find of all humans who have ever lived, is about 69 billion. Even this very conservative estimate shows that the majority of people have died and passed into eternity. Why then do most spend so little time preparing for eternity? We think young children foolish, who devote all their energy to satisfy immediate cravings. Yet, many of us are behaving similarly.
Though many believe that there’s nothing after death to worry about, Scripture says that God will ultimately execute judgment by fire upon the present heavens and earth. He’ll replace them with eternal “new heavens and a new earth” (2 Peter 3:13). Speaking of those who mock this idea of a final judgment, God inspired the apostle Peter to write:
“For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (2 Peter 3:5-7)
Jesus, Himself, likened this unexpected and devastating judgment to the flood of Noah’s day. Jesus pointed out that this judgment took people by complete surprise.
“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (Matthew 24:38-39)
God the Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth to die for sinners. He’s the only one able to deliver from the eternal doom we all deserve, and provide everlasting life instead. Speaking under God’s inspiration, John the Baptist said of Jesus Christ,
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)
Both destinies are eternal. Eons into the future, your life on earth will seem but a mere moment of time. If you die without truly trusting the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, your despair shall never end.
