Are You Trapped in a Spiritual Conspiracy?

Conspiracy is “an agreement to perform together an illegal, wrongful, or subversive act” (The Free Dictionary).  I’ve lost count of the times I’ve heard people labeled as “conspiracy theorists.”  The expression is used to discredit opposition.  The implied underlying assumption is that conspiracies don’t exist.  Thus, anyone suggesting otherwise is deemed deluded and without credibility.  Though not everyone charged with conspiracy is guilty, true conspirators have motivation to discredit opponents by labeling them “conspiracy theorists.”

Scripture describes many conspiracies.  Fallen man is prone to collective evil doing.

Jacob, patriarch of Israel, sent his favorite son, Joseph, to check on his brothers tending flocks many miles away.  In envy, they conspired against him.

“And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.” (Genesis 37:18)

When King David’s wicked son, Absalom, sought to usurp his father’s throne, Scripture called the maneuvers of Absalom and his associates, a “conspiracy.”

“And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.” (2 Samuel 15:12)

Since conspiracies actually exist, God warns us to avoid them.

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.  If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: … My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:” (Proverbs 1:10-15)

Perhaps the most notable conspiracy of history is the mock trial of Jesus Christ, the Savior.  Religious leaders conspired together, seeking false witnesses to accuse Jesus of wickedness.

“Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;  But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,  And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.” (Matthew 26:59-61)

God mercifully used this evil conspiracy to fulfill all the ancient prophesies regarding the Messiah.  Jesus died, was buried, and rose again as the pure Lamb of God.  He alone can redeem from the eternal consequences of our sin.
