Are You Ashamed of God the Son?

I have a friend. He once spoke to me of a problem that troubled him greatly saying, “I’ve been praying to god about it.” My friend is of Hindu persuasion, so I asked, “To which of your gods are you praying?” He held up 10 fingers and began to name 10 gods to whom he prayed most frequently. I told him it made me sad that, while he was praying to 10 “gods” that couldn’t save him from sin, he was ignoring the one true God who could. He seemed to appreciate my concern for his soul.

What distinguishes the one true God from all the others? It is that He, alone, created the universe and exists in three persons: God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Only He came as the Father’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah, to die and rise again to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).

Today, almost anyone can speak of “god” without much opposition. But, when Christians mention “Jesus Christ,” the anger and persecution begins. Scripture tells us:

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

When I was young, Christians consistently acknowledged, in their prayers, that they were approaching God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son (see John 16:23). More recently, I’ve noticed Christians closing their prayers with words like the following:

“In your name I pray. Amen.”

Whose name? Are you ashamed to mention the name of Jesus? In this day of confusion, we need to clearly acknowledge, especially in our public prayers, that it is only in the name of Jesus, God’s Son, that we can approach God the Father. There is no other way (John 14:6). Jesus said,

“Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).

Are you ashamed of Jesus Christ?
