ALWAYS THE SAME

God is Always the Same. What will this mean for you?

Kathy and I recently obtained a beautiful piece of duet music. It contemplates the incredible and unchanging nature of God. Scripture speaks, in many places, of God’s unchanging nature which is also called His immutability.

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6)

The writer of Hebrews refers to God the Son, Jesus Christ, as follows:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Centuries before God the Son took on flesh by means of His virgin birth, the prophet Micah referred to Him. Notice that He has always existed.

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” (Micah 5:2)

We, as humans, are locked in a forward progression of time, knowing not what the future holds. Those who belong to Christ take comfort in the fact that Christ is immutable. We are secure because He redeemed us by paying the awful penalty for our sins on the cross at Calvary. He says to His redeemed,

“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:8)

God’s immutability guarantees ultimate and everlasting blessing to the child of God.

However, there is another implication of God’s immutability which many are reluctant to mention. Those who never come to trust in Jesus Christ, the risen Savior, will bear His eternal wrath. Many have memorized the following passage.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

However, in the very same chapter we read,

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)

For how long shall unbelievers endure His wrath? Because of God’s immutability, His wrath shall endure forever!

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” (Matthew 25:41)

Which part of God’s immutability will you choose?
