GRAFFITI ON GOD’S IMAGE

HAVE YOU ASKED CHRIST TO WASH AWAY YOUR HEART’S WICKED GRAFFITI?

Graffiti mars anything it’s placed on.  This includes the image God created of Himself.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:26-27)

God created man to picture Himself.  Notice that this picture portrayed the dominion of God over His creation.  In fact, the purpose of all creation was to portray the glory of God.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” (Psalms 19:1)

I have a picture of my wife.  I value it because it portrays her beautiful likeness.  I would be angry if someone marred it with graffiti.  This would destroy the picture’s ability to make me think of her.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they destroyed their own usefulness in portraying God’s holiness and dominion.  They effectively defiled that image with wicked graffiti.  They also defiled the images provided by all their descendents.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” (Romans 5:12)

Consequently, each of us was born with graffiti marring God’s holy image which we’re supposed to be.  Furthermore, because of our fallen natures, we’re constantly adding more wicked graffiti, which God hates, to our already defiled images.  Left to ourselves, there’s nothing we can do to alleviate God’s wrath toward us.

“For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.  Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.” (Ephesians 5:5-6)

But God provided a costly redemption for His people.  Speaking of the sacrificial crucifixion of God, His Son, Jesus Christ, He says:

”For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Because of this, God promises:

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)

Has He drawn you to Himself, removing graffiti, and causing you to love Him from the depths of your heart?
