I WILL GUIDE THEE WITH MINE EYE

His Eye Clearly Sees His Path on which He Leads His Sheep

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” (Psalms 32:8)

Several days ago, this passage caught my attention when I heard it quoted.  I thought, “Why is God assuring the psalmist, David, that He will guide him with His eye?  Why not just take David’s hand and lead him?”  The more I pondered this, the more it made sense to me.

All of humanity is divided into two groups.  There are those who yield to the guidance of God’s eye, and those who don’t.  Earlier in this Psalm, David had said,

“Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.” (Psalms 32:2)

Those to whom God doesn’t impute (or charge with) iniquity are those that have confessed their sins to God.  They’ve asked Him for forgiveness.  King David explains how this happened to him.

“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.” (Psalm 32:5).

Jesus later pointed out that those who are His forgiven sheep follow Himself.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:27)

Christ’s sheep follow Him in this spiritually dark world.  Why is this important?  Fleshly yearnings still trouble God’s redeemed people.  Though they have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, such yearnings can still dim their spiritual vision.

Consider the physical act of traveling a mountainous forest pathway at night.  Someone with poor vision would likely stumble and fall.  The same is true in the spiritual sense.   Those following God the Son, Jesus Christ, as Savior, are following one who has perfect vision.   His eye detects every danger that is encountered on life’s pathway.   In fact, He is the living Word of God.  As such, He is “… a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)  He never has nor ever will stumble into any of Satan’s snares in the darkness.  While His sheep are carefully following Him, they won’t either.  They are being guided by the perfect, spiritual vision of His eye.  He safely leads them through the spiritual dangers of this world.

Sadly, many who think they’re following Christ really aren’t.  Instead, they’re caught up in demonstrating the appearance of following Him without actually doing so.  Many attend various churches every week but have no desire to read, study, believe, and obey His Word, the Bible.  Jesus  describes the response of unsaved religious people that He shall, one day, cast out of His presence.

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:22-23)

Is He leading you by His eye?  Are you following Him?
