Hillside of Warning

When little, I loved visiting my Grandma in her country home. She lived on Main Street in a small rural town. Main Street is in a large valley. Since then, Interstate 88, was constructed parallel to main street. It runs along that large, long valley for well over one hundred miles. High hills rise from both sides of that valley. They are said to be “foothills” of the Catskill Mountains.
Years later, my parents and sister purchased properties on the hill high above Main Street. Our children enjoyed visiting my parents high up on that hill. They went rock collecting on my sister’s vacant lot across the street. They discovered, and showed us, something very interesting about the rocks they found. Many of them contained fossils. In those rocks were the visible shapes of sea shells and other sea creatures. It seemed strange to find such things so high above a valley hundreds of miles from the nearest seashore.
Where could those fossils have come from? I believe the obvious answer is found in the Bible. It tells of a worldwide flood which covered the whole earth. God sent that flood to destroy the wickedness of man. However, He told one man, Noah, to build an ark. It would float on top of that flood saving the lives of Noah and his family. The following passage explains the extent of that flood.
“And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.” (Genesis 7:17-20)
God warns that those, who are “willingly ignorant” of the flood, risk destruction in another event yet to come. It will be destruction by fire rather than by water. (2 Peter 3:3-7)
God the Son, Jesus Christ died and rose again to save sinners. He invites them to seek His forgiveness. Do you take seriously the fossils of warning high on the hill? Have you asked the Lord for His forgiveness?
