On day six of creation, God created one man and one woman whom he joined together in a covenant relationship.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:27)

Adam was delighted and praised God for the great blessing of a wife which God had given him.

“This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:23‑24)

God established this covenant marriage relationship for several reasons.  One was for Adam and Eve to enjoy companionship together.

“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

Another reason for establishing this covenant companionship was to procreate the human race.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion …” (Genesis 1:27‑28)

Most importantly, however, God designed this covenant husband-wife relationship as a picture of Christ’s loving relationship with those He would redeem from sin.

“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.  This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:31‑32)

Violation of this Holy covenant relationship God calls adultery.  While on earth, God the Son, the Lord Jesus, said

“…Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” (Matthew 19:9)

Today, many reject God’s decrees regarding the Holy marriage covenant.  Consequently, they also reject what that covenant pictures.  They are rejecting Christ’s redemptive work and filling society with all manner of perversion.  Ultimately, God will have the last word on this matter.

Are you embracing God’s covenant marriage relationship which pictures Christ’s redemption?
