Where is Time Taking You?

Can you explain time to me? How long does a period of time have to be in order to be called “a long time?” How short must it be before we call it “a short time?” When I was only a few years old, a month seemed long. Now that I’m nearly 70, it seems to pass quickly! Perhaps this results from our tendency to compare new time periods with periods we’ve already experienced. When I think of a year, I compare it to the years I’ve already lived. Today, a year is a much smaller fraction of my current age than it was when I was only three.
Since God has always existed, any length of time is short by comparison. The apostle Peter reminds us that, in this context, there is small difference between a day and a thousand years. They’re both short!
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (2 Peter 3:8)
All time to God is short compared to His eternity of existence. He reminds us that all of our lives are very short.
“…Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14)
As each year passes, this truth becomes more obvious to my mind and heart.
Because of man’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden, God’s promised consequence of death faces each person. When life draws to a close, death makes its claim. With sovereign love, God offered the blood of His only begotten Son to pay sin’s eternal penalty. Being God, Jesus was able to willingly finish this payment and rise from the dead. All who come to trust Him will escape the eternal punishment awaiting those who continue to reject Him.
Regarding the appointed end of your physical life, God declares:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” (Hebrews 9:27-28)
Our appointed time is running out quickly. Are you looking for Him?
