PREPARE FOR THE SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED

Sudden and Unexpected as Lightning

Jesus taught His disciples about His future return.  It will be as sudden and unexpected as lightning, taking many by surprise.  You never know when lightning will strike next but, when it strikes, it’s immediately done!

“For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (Matthew 24:27)

He will send His angels to gather His elect to be with Him forever.

“And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:31)

Immediately before explaining this, He had warned that many would be looking for Him in all the wrong places.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.  Behold, I have told you before.  Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. (Matthew 24:24-26)

After describing the lightning suddenness of His coming, He told them what those days would be like.

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matthew 24:37-39)

Jesus, who is God the Son, shall return!  Though eternal with no beginning, He took on flesh through His virgin birth.  He died and rose again to save His people from their sins.

Speaking to Christians, the apostle Paul described this event in similar terms of suddenness.

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)

Are you ready or deceived?
