WHO IS “MOTHER NATURE?”

Do You Ever Desire Blessings from “mother nature?”

I often hear folks speak of “mother nature.” She’s blamed for bad weather and praised for good weather. Who is she? Does Scripture speak of her?

Though I’ve studied the Bible for years, I find no reference to a weather god called “mother nature.” In fact, God’s Word emphatically states that the Lord God, Jehovah, is the only one who controls these powerful elements He created. Speaking of Him, the prophet Jeremiah reminds us:

“He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures” (Jeremiah 51:15-16).

Unfortunately, fallen man’s heart forges many false gods giving them names like “Baal,” “Chemosh,” and, in our day, “mother nature.” These false gods are all evil. For example, Baal worshipers offered their children as burnt offerings, hoping for blessings of good weather and plentiful crops which would produce economic stability.

Regarding these false gods, God, the almighty creator, spoke through His prophet Isaiah:

“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it” (Isaiah 46:9-11).

Ascribing God’s mighty control over nature to the false deity, “mother nature,” is blasphemy. Such blasphemy tends to also blind our hearts to the mighty redemptive act of God the Son, Jesus Christ. He offered Himself to die on the cross of Calvary, and rise again, as the mighty redeemer and sacrificial sin bearer for His people. Without Him, salvation is impossible.

Have you asked this true God to save you, or are you worshipping false gods like “mother nature?”
