WHAT IS TRUTH?

“What is truth?” (John 18:38). Pilate asked Jesus this question during His Roman trial. It was a cynical question asked by one who had lived his life immersed in a system filled with lying and deceit. Pilate had become powerful by playing that deceitful game. In the process he had come to doubt the very existence of truth itself. His question was filled with cynicism, frustration and hopelessness.

Nonexistence of truth would be a horrible thing. Even in the tangible world, dependability and truthfulness of the laws of physics, chemistry, thermodynamics and engineering are essential. Absence of them would render the many technological blessings we enjoy, impossible. If truth in the spiritual realm were nonexistent, we would be in an even more pitiable condition.

How often have you heard someone say, “What’s true for you is not necessarily true for me.”? That is an incredibly ridiculous statement! It presumes the non-existence of truth. Such a statement, taken literally, would indicate that one man living on earth is affected by gravity while another may not be!

If truth exists, then, what is it?

Pilate’s question was a response to Jesus’ preceding statement. Jesus had just told Pilate, “for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice” (John 18:37). Previously, Jesus had told His disciple, Thomas, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

There you have it. Jesus, God the Son, who shed His blood for His people on the cross of Calvary, is Truth. He is the only means of obtaining salvation and forgiveness from God the Father. Do you believe in truth? More importantly, do you believe that Jesus is that Truth? If so, then I ask you, what do you know about Jesus? Do you know only what men have told you, or have you read about Him, for yourself, in His Word, the Bible? There are many lies being propagated about Jesus by many religious systems. Only if you know Jesus, as He describes Himself in the Bible, do you know the Truth. Read it! Study it!

Do you know the Truth?
