I often hear folks say, “I’m glad it’s Friday.” Let me ask you a question, though. What if you had supernatural information that your eventual death would occur on a Friday? Would you still look forward to Fridays? Specifically, would you still look forward to this Friday?
Most people who say, “I’m glad it’s Friday,” are making some assumptions about what’s going to happen on the weekend. The weekend they anticipate, in their minds, usually includes pleasant activities such as relaxation with family, making progress on home projects, a weekend vacation, or other desirable events. We often make statements about the enjoyable things we will do on the weekend.
In the Bible, however, God cautions us not to boast about a future that is hidden to us. He says,
“Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).
He also warns us that,
“…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
Could it be that this coming Friday will become your day to face the eternal judge? If so, will you look forward to this event?
The very next words, following the passage just quoted, tell us,
“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:28).
This Friday could very well be the day that your body and soul become separated. However the Lord Jesus Christ, who is God the Son, offered His life blood to redeem all who repent of their sins, cry to Him for mercy, and ask Him for salvation. Those who have been given faith in Christ will be looking for His return with eager anticipation.
Have you admitted to God that you are a sinner with no hope of earning your own salvation? Have you asked Him to apply His blood bought forgiveness to your account, and save you from sin? Do you now loathe your sin and desire God’s power to live, righteously, before Him? Are you one of those that joyfully anticipate being in the very presence of your risen Savior?
If you die today, will Christ be your Savior or your convicting judge?
