Will You Step Only On Those Places God’s Word Shows You?

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” (Psalms 37:23)
Yesterday, an insurance company adjuster came to inspect roofs on several of our buildings. He was accompanied by his son, Nathan. Several days earlier, we had experienced severe winds which damaged roofs on two of our buildings.
Our barn is steel with a metal roof. The roof is anchored to the underlying steel structure by gasketed screws which penetrate the corrugated roofing material. As Nathan stepped from the ladder onto the roof, his father called up to him, “Step only on the screws!” Why did he do that? In between the screws are large sections of roof not supported by the underlying steel structure. Stepping on those areas could cause severe damage and even injury! I observed Nathan carefully choosing his steps as he moved across that roof. It was also a wet and rainy day. Even a small slip of his feet could send him hurtling over the edge of the two-story-high roof!
As I thought about this, it seemed like a good illustration of a spiritual reality. God’s Word, the Bible, tells us where and how to walk through life. Today, most of the world pays little attention to what the Bible says. Even many, who claim to be Christians, do not carefully guide their feet to walk in accordance with His Word. Even the Psalmist, Asaph, admitted to faltering in his spiritual pathway.
“Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:1-3)
Christian: are we focusing our desires on obtaining comforts of this life? Or, are we focused on walking in the path Christ has assigned to us? Do we fail to notice the Bible’s anchor points we must step on to avoid disaster? Or do we try to test the limits, and step just a little way from the locations God has marked for our feet?
Unsaved person: Do you recognize that the path you are following can only lead to eternal death?
Only the Lord’s Word can properly mark the places where we should place our spiritual feet. The psalmist recognized the importance of heeding God’s Word in this matter.
“… Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Where are your steps leading you?
