COME UNTO ME

“COME UNTO ME”

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

This is an amazing statement by God the Son, creator and supreme ruler of the universe.  The one and only true God, Jehovah, tells us that those He invites to come don’t deserve it.  Even those who were Israelites were disobedient and “gainsaying.”

“But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.” (Romans 10:21)

The word “gainsaying” in the above passage indicates much more than lack of response to God’s invitation.  It indicates a blasphemous verbal repudiation of it.  Today, many do this by using God’s name as a curse-word to invoke their own authority over others.

God’s prophet, Isaiah, described such individuals as “wicked” and revealed their inability to rest from their anti-God lifestyle.

“But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.  There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.”                (Isaiah 57:20-21)

Sadly, those reaching life’s end without trusting Jesus Christ as Savior shall never find rest.  God gave the apostle John an incredible preview of the coming final judgment of unrepentant people.  From this preview, we see that absence of rest continues on into eternity for the unsaved.

“The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, …” (Revelation 14:10-11)

One need not be a seminary theologian to understand God’s invitation.  Saving faith must come from a childlike heart that simply understands its own wickedness and Christ’s sufficient payment for sin.  Jesus’ disciples thought that mere children shouldn’t be brought to Jesus, but Jesus rebuked them saying:

“… Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.  Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.  And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.” (Mark 10:14-16)

Jesus is God the Son who took on human flesh through His virgin birth.  He lived sinlessly.  He willingly bore the wrath of God His Father, at Calvary, as a substitute for His people.  (see 2 Corinthians 5: 21)

Has God caused you to hear and respond to His undeserved call to “come” directly to Him?
