GOD SEPARATED LIGHT AND DARKNESS

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:1-4)
In these very first few sentences from God’s Word, the Bible, we see God separating light and darkness. Light and darkness are incompatible and cannot be intertwined. Only one can prevail at the same time and place. Notice that God did not declare darkness to be “good.” He declared light to be “good.”
This physical illustration exemplifies a spiritual truth which permeates Scripture. Light and darkness cannot thrive together.
After God created the woman from man’s rib and brought her to Adam, Adam said:
“…This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:23-24)
Sin had not yet permeated the human race, and so the man and woman lived together in God’s perfect light. As creatures of light, they were perfectly compatible with each other.
Then the serpent tempted them to sin and they fell into darkness. God then sacrificed animals to cover them as an illustration of the salvation He would provide through God the Son, Jesus Christ. Today, most of mankind still lives in darkness. Relatively few walk in the light of God’s presence as His saved children.
God now forbids saved people from marrying unsaved people because light and darkness are incompatible. Though marriage is not the only yoke which can join two people, it is, indeed, an extremely important yoke. God says:
“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14)
If you are a true Christian trusting Christ as your Savior, you must not marry an unbeliever! It would be an act of blatant disobedience to God. Spiritual darkness and spiritual light will never unite in a Godly manner. In fact, if you marry an unbeliever, you may be revealing that you are not, truly, a believer yourself.
Are you a Christian contemplating marriage? Is the one you are planning to marry a true Christian? Has he or she confessed their sins to God and asked for salvation based on the sacrificial blood of Christ? If not, don’t marry that person!
